I'm working on creating an animated collage.
Here's what I've come up with so far,
as you can see there's texture, shading,
lights, and reflections in this cube composed of
random cubes, it's animated.

Steven Malinowski created the Music Animation Machine, this is a great example of how large amounts of data can be processed on a single screen if designed properly, in this machine we see music, time tone, etc.
When you create a diagram or visualization focus on the causality.
Use all the data you need to get your point across, don't simplify.
Don't decide the mode of display or the data set in advance, the driving force behind a display should be the content.
In your designs, question every element, why is this element there?
Detail is supposed to clarify and provide context.
Clutter and confusion are failures of design.
"No matter how beautiful your interface, it would be more beautiful if there were less of it"
When you create a presentation focus on two things: Telling your story, and conveying credibility, everything you say should be provided with reasons to believe it.
Always keep this in mind, all science is based on this: "This is the best explanation until a better one comes along", apply this statement to everything you say.
A good sign of good design in a visual display is, is it intriguing?
Always have a super graphic in your designs, a super graphic is a display that shows a tremendous ammount of data, e.g Minar'ds Graphic on Napoleon's Russian invasion.
If you provide handouts instead of using slideshows people can go over your information at their own pace using their own cognitive process.
Powerpoint is an authoritarian process.
The audience you're talking to has been filtered, they are as smart as you are and probably are interested in the same things, dont dumb down your presentation:
HIGH RESOLUTION DESIGN
Allow the user to poke around and explore.
Allow personalization.
Evidence is mode indifferent, content can be presented in many different ways, it depends on personal preferences.
If you have a real object that you can show, bring it to your presentation.
Annotate everything.
In design 1+1=3 Everything interacts, creates tension, vibration, always reduce contrast between elements.
When you evaluate your designs always ask yourself, what is the strongest element in this design, where is the strangest visual activity? Is this an accident? What did I intend for that?
Sports data is a great example of high resolution displays of information, millions of people look at it everyday and there's no need to dumb it down or make simple charts as Powerpoint forces you to do.
A successful display is the NY Times website, there are over 400 links on the homepage and yet people navigate through it easily every day.
Apple's industrial designer once said:
"We don't do focus groups, we look at successful models and reuse them"
Focus on what works in the wild, forget about naive focus groups and usability tests.
In your displays content is your priority forget about the techniques.
Slides should be about content not the media through which they're created.
A lot of the history of science comes down to advances in resolution of data.
Always avoid codification, it creates an extra step makes things difficult to understand.
Show multivariate data, use whatever it takes to explain something.
Galileo quote:
"What was observed by us in the third place is the nature or matter of the Milky Way itself, which, with the aid of the spyglass, may be observed so well that all the disputes that for so many generations have vexed philosophers are destroyed by visible certainty, and we are liberated from wordy arguments"
When everyone tries to show their fingerprint in the design, it kills it.
Minimize format, maximize content.
No matter how beautiful your interface, it would be more beautiful if there were less of it.
You don't need to use icons and words, one thing should be enough to say what you mean.
Lose administrative debris.
Graphics should be everywhere, they should not become special events in your designs.

So I'm starting to learn Python, specifically ro manipulate words, as an exercise I grabbed the latest news report on Fox News about President Obama and modified it, I used some of the words in the Jabberwocky poem, and some other words from Vogon Poetry, this is the result:
President Obama has developed a hooptiously drangle of lurgid care plured that snale cost a snizglet of the polus tag of snale lurgid but the krins polus lurgid down the Plan B as the president drangle a wildebeest lurgid care foobly foonting in hooptiously
snale krins snale Secretary plured krins told Fox News that "we are not foonting on any kind of lurgid plan krins into the foonting krins will polus foonting krins and lurgid drangle from both drangle to plured the lurgid care foonting that foonting to stop in its foobly last snale groop wildebeest krins krins was freddle to the U.S. lurgid from gabbleblochits
"The president is freddle gobberwarts on lurgid happening at drangle meeting," krins told Fox polus
gabbleblochits officials said the plan is "not polus we are now" and was polus up at drangle freddle krins the bindlewurdles snizglet that cost Democrats polus filibuster-proof majority.
But micturations krins snizglet to foobly the foonting have polus the last freddle groop foonting it as a polus op for the president and a trap to make them look micturations on the lurgid The plan they have drangle is lurgid different from the gobberwarts plan and the wildebeest snale that have lurgid drangle both snizglet of Congress, and foobly plured drangle snizglet
The wildebeest bill krins cost snale a drangle of the foonting $950 freddle plan groop put on the snale on drangle freddle told Fox krins
The Wall foobly drangle snale snizglet foonting that freddle groop had snizglet the blueprint for a bindlewurdles polus freddle said the lurgid groop plured foonting to polus 15 freddle freddle or half the plured the plured plan groop foobly
It krins foobly foonting and the wildebeest plured Insurance snizglet groop snizglet plured to stay on snale foonting plured krins snale age 26.
But the idea of what one bindlewurdles snizglet lurgid foonting foobly care plured may encounter polus wildebeest in the lurgid
"Inaction and gabbleblochits are foobly gabbleblochits polus freddle polus plured said in freddle snizglet foobly wildebeest drangle polus Democrats are foobly sure to lurgid groop for a hooptiously snale
"We are groop drangle with a big foobly a top foonting told Fox polus
The snale snale and bindlewurdles Democrats are drangle drangle drangle to pass some kind of plured care snale
polus foobly that it krins be krins to snale from the bindlewurdles foonting that the lurgid does not want any lurgid care drangle drangle he polus the foonting foobly want to see hooptiously and lurgid on drangle krins
"I groop polus the snizglet foobly want us to walk groop freddle they do know this -- if we groop do anything, snale snizglet will go up," he krins "If we do foonting foobly care snizglet will wildebeest foobly what we have to prevent."
